Description:

In the center of Rostov-on-Don is the oldest square of the city - Cathedral. Its main attractions are the monument to St. Dmitry and the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. Each of them has its own unique destiny.

In the past years, a bronze monument to Alexander II, 5 meters high, towered on the square. The history of the monument is connected with the tragic death of the emperor. After the murder of Alexander II on March 1, 1881, just a week later, the local authorities of Rostov decided to establish a monument to the emperor-liberator. The money for the monument was donated by the residents of the city. In 1890, the memorial was installed on the Cathedral Square. But in 1924 it was destroyed by Soviet workers.

The monument to St. Dmitry, the patron saint of the city, was erected not so long ago and this event once again proves the restoration of spirituality among the inhabitants of the southern capital and Russia as a whole. There are not so many monuments to the saints in the country, we can even say that the Rostov monument is the only one of its kind.

The Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God adjoins the square. The architect of the temple was Tone, a famous architect in his time. The cathedral is an exact copy of the Vvedensky Cathedral in St. Petersburg. At the moment, the church and the adjacent square require reconstruction, it is assumed that they will be restored at the expense of patrons.
