Archaeological Museum-Reserve "Tanais"

The Tanais Archaeological Museum-Reserve received its first visitors in 1961. The title monument, on the basis of which the museum-reserve was created - the ruins of the ancient city of Tanais preserved to this day. In the third century BC. V century AD it was the extreme north-eastern point of the ancient world, located in the depths of the vast space of the nomadic steppe and played an important role in establishing contacts between the ancient Greeks and Romans with the tribes of “barbarians” inhabiting the “wild steppe”.

The main activities of the museum-reserve: scientific archaeological research of the world-famous monument, whose name the museum-reserve is named, protection and preservation of archaeological objects, creation of museum expositions and exhibitions, improvement of the infrastructure necessary for the normal functioning of the museum-reserve, accounting, preservation, description and introduction into scientific circulation of archaeological finds, implementation of scientific and educational activities, creation of conditions for tourist activities.

Today, more than 150 thousand museum items are stored in the depositories of the museum-reserve.

The Tanais Museum-Reserve offers a variety of services: excursions, historical workshops, lessons of ancient crafts, master classes, cognitive and game programs for schoolchildren of all ages and specialized programs for people with disabilities. On the territory of the reserve, theatrical holidays that have already become traditional are held annually.
