About the company:
The opening of the Rostov Regional Museum of Fine Arts officially took place in 1938, but the formation of the collection has a longer history. At the beginning of the twentieth century in Rostov-on-Don was created Rostov-Nakhchivan Society of Fine Arts, exhibitions of which exhibited works of artists from different cities of Russia, which then entered the private collections of local patrons, and after the revolution entered the museum. In 1959, the museum moved to the historical building at 115 Pushkinskaya Street.
In 2009, the museum was opened at 60 Chekhov Avenue. In the second building of ROMIA were formed halls of Western European art, a hall for changing exhibitions of contemporary art and halls dedicated to the art of the East (China, Japan). On the first floor of the building there is a children's art gallery. The entire fourth floor was occupied by a storage department and a restoration workshop.
The collection reflects the main processes of art development of the XVII-XIX centuries in Western Europe. Its collections represent all the major European schools of this period: Italian, Dutch, Flemish, French and German. Among them are the works of the caravaggist Mattia Pretti “The Dice Game”, the Venetian Giulio Carpione “Bacchanalia”, the sculpture of Antonio Canova “The Writing Boy” and much more. The dominant collection of Western Europe is the canvas workshop of Peter Paul Rubens “Susanna and the Elders”.
Interesting works of French artists of the XVII centuries: Jean François de Troyes “Landscape with a flock”, Pierre Andrier “Hercules finds Fialo and Echmahor” and others. The pride of the museum is the works of the French sculptor Claudion (Claude Michel) “Pomont”, “Satire and Bacchanca”, “Drunk Strongen”.
Part of the foreign collection are works of art of the peoples of the East. Among them, the brightest porcelain, carved bone, snuffboxes of China of the XVIII century, several rare luboks and Japanese netske. The ornament of the eastern collection is two stone sculptures of twins of the heavenly “Hae-he Brothers”, dating from the XII century.
Currently, the museum is actively engaged in scientific and educational activities, organizes cycles of thematic lectures on art "City lectures". The Children’s Art Gallery conducts daily creative master classes with leading teachers of painting. The museum regularly attracts musical groups to organize joint concerts. For contemporary artists, the museum provides an opportunity for exhibition activities in its halls.
