The Church of Elijah (Temple in the Name of the Holy Prophet Elijah)

Description:

The first Ilyinsky temple was, as the documents say, “in the city”, that is, in the Kremlin, near the Spassky Monastery and was wooden. In 1679 it was moved "to the posad in the old prison" behind the Glebov Gate.

Instead of a wooden church in 1699-1700 years of brick from the collapsed Assumption Cathedral was built the present church. Later, a chapel was built in the name of the Great Martyr George.

In the Ilyinsk Church service was conducted after the revolution of 1917. The temple became one of the few centers of church life of Ryazan. Many people came here for worship.

The temple was closed on November 18, 1929. It was found to be suitable for grain. Since then, the temple has been rebuilt many times. Even in 1940, the authorities found that “the facade was not rectified from the prayer building,” and urgent measures were taken. For a long time in the church there was a lecture hall of the society “Knowledge”. Already in the 1990s, when Orthodox churches began to be transferred to the Church, the Ilyinsky Church was threatened with the fate of becoming the Wedding Palace. But that didn't happen. On February 5, 2000, the temple of Elijah the Prophet was consecrated again.
