Ryazan region, Rybnovsky district, Poshchupovo village
Description:
Ioanno-Theologian Monastery is located 25 kilometers from Ryazan, in the village of Poshchupovo, Rybnovsky district of the Ryazan region. The history of the monastery begins with the end of the XII or the beginning of the XIII century, since the arrival of monks with the miraculous icon of John the Theologian, written in the VI century. In the XVI - XVII centuries, the monastery was repeatedly attacked by the Tatars. All the buildings of the monastery were wooden until the middle of the XVII century. In the second half of the XIX century, the monastery is experiencing a period of prosperity.
In 1931, the monastery was closed, the inhabitants of the monastery together with the abbot were exiled to Kazakhstan. The main shrine of the monastery – the miraculous icon of the Apostle John the Theologian – disappeared without a trace. The revival of the monastery began in 1988, when it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church.
From the stone buildings of the XVII century to the present day, the Holy Gate has been preserved, the interior of which is decorated with an ancient fresco painting, the two-storey cathedral of John the Theologian, a small tent bell tower and the abbot building. The Assumption Cathedral of the XVII century has not survived to our time, it was dismantled in 1868 because of the dilapidated state.
Near the monastery, near the ancient monastic caves, there is a Holy spring, since ancient times considered miraculous. The source has a spacious font and is available to everyone.
