Ryazan

Postal Street

Description:

Postal street is often called “Ryazan Broadway” or “Ryazan Arbat”. Bards often perform here, artists exhibit works on the first floors of houses preserved from pre-revolutionary times, small shops, cafes, restaurants are cozy.

The street received its name due to the presence here of the first post office in the province. The appearance of a post office in Ryazan was associated with the activities of the first Ryazan governor M. N. Krechetnikov. Thanks to his efforts, the Moscow-Astrakhan postal route passed through the provincial city, and not through Zaraysk and Skopin. The track became shorter by 31 versts, and Ryazan acquired its own post office. Postal street, narrow and short, eventually turned into the main shopping street of the city. From March 27, 1920, it began to bear the name of V. N. Podbelsky - the first People's Commissar of Posts and Telegraphs of Russia. However, in 1994, the street returned its historical name.

The post office connected the three main streets of the city: Astrakhan, Moscow and Cathedral. The continuation of the street - from Astrakhan to Pushkin Boulevard - was called Nizhne-Postova Street.
