Gelannovsk Museum of Local History

Zhelannovsk Museum of Local Lore was founded as a small local lore in 1958 in the Zhelannovskaya seven-year school by a team of local teachers.

Stages of formation: since 1958 - a school museum, in 1961 it was transformed into a people's public rural museum. Since 1968 - State Museum, branch of the Ryazan Historical and Architectural Museum-Reserve. In 1996 it became an independent regional museum. In 1968, a special building was built for the museum, in which it is located today.

Today, the museum stores more than 16 thousand monuments of material and spiritual culture of the history of Shatsky Krai. These are collections of objects of ethnography and everyday life, numismatics and archaeology, documents and photo documents, painting and graphics, objects of natural origin. The museum has departments: modern nature, history of the region from ancient times to the present day, art and geology.

On the territory of the museum there is an annual regional festival of songs and a festival of the village “Under the blue sky of the Zhelannovsk expanses”. Two interesting “exhibits” live at the museum: the camel Vasily and the donkey Masha. They are very popular with museum visitors.
