Monument to Eupathy Kolovrat

Description:

In the autumn of 2007 in Ryazan at the intersection of Lenin and Pochtava streets was solemnly opened a monument to Evpatia Kolovrat. This monument is dedicated to the memory of the courageous Russian hero and symbolizes the courage and resilience of the entire Russian people. The sculptural composition is a brick-colored pedestal with a hero riding a horse that stood on the racks.

Evpatii Kolovrat has forever written his name in the history of not only his native land, but also the entire Russian land after a brave battle with the bloodthirsty Khan Batu, who in the 13th century unexpectedly attacked all his numerous troops on Russia.

The work of ancient Russian literature “The Tale of the Destruction of Ryazan by Batu” describes in detail those sad events when Batu hordes came to the Ryazan land and almost burned down a very well-developed city at that time. When the voivode Evpaty Kolovrat returned home from another military campaign, then, seeing the devastation that Batu Khan had inflicted on his native lands, he became furious. Without thinking twice, Evpaty Kolovrat decided to catch up with Batu’s army and take revenge on the Tatar Khan at all costs. Gathering a squad of only about 1,700 soldiers, the Ryazan hero went in pursuit of the Khan and his horde of thousands, overtook them and entered into a deadly battle. Khan Baty was so impressed with the bravery and courage of Evpaty Kolovrat that after the death of the Ryazan hero, he sent his body back with honors.

Nowadays, the monument to Evpaty Kolovrat in Ryazan is one of the most colorful in the city, and over the years of its existence has already been loved by many Ryazan residents. The author of the monument is the local sculptor Oleg Sedov, who became the winner of the competition announced by the government of the Ryazan region for the creation of this monument. Sedov’s project won competition among a dozen other projects of the monument due to its expressiveness and charisma, as the jury of the competition noted in its final decision.
