Rzhev

Roads of battle, roads of victory and defeat. Tver - Elder - Rzhev - Tver

Description:

From Tver we will go to Rzhev through the Old One and return to Tver on the same road. Our way lies in the ancient Rzhev, the northernmost point of the ledge Rzhev-Sychevka-Vyazma-Gzhatsk, which the soldiers of the Wehrmacht called the cornerstone of the Eastern Front, a springboard to Moscow, aimed at it with a dagger. On the way (about two hours) I will tell you about the “three times princely city”. Rzhev in the Middle Ages, his merchant old-believer color in the New Age. You will find out what is zaka and why they should not get ruszevics, what “delicacy” was famous Rzhev in the past and what relation to him has the famous “lieutenant Rzhevsky”.

Along the way, I will also talk about the main stages of the Battle of Rzhev – the four offensive operations on the Rzhev-Vyazem ledge, their strategic result, losses on both sides, the liberation of Rzhev in March 1943, and what the city looked like after the German withdrawal.

In Rzhev we will visit the Alley of Heroes of the Soviet Union, dedicated to the participants of the Battle of Rzhev 1942-1943, appreciate the originality of the layout and panoramas of Rzhev. We will see a rare landscape for flat terrain, in which two banks of the Volga are opposed - high, steep, steep, cut through the deep gullible channel of the Holynka river on the left and descending to the water with two terraces on the right. We stand on the Cathedral Hill, where in the Middle Ages, the Rzhev Kremlin was located. I will tell a beautiful story about the legendary prince who defended the city for centuries and left it because of human stupidity and greed, admire the wonderful view of the Volga, two Volga bridges and the Okovetsky Cathedral, dominating the panorama of the right bank.

We will visit the Pokrovsky Old Believers Church with a fully preserved iconostasis of 1908 and a collection of icons, documents, decorative and applied arts that reflect the history of Old Believers. In the courtyard of the church we will see the grave of the rector of the church, Father Andrei Popov, shot by a German patrolman in 1942. I will tell you how on March 3, 1943, Soviet intelligence officers liberated 248 survivors of Rzhev who had been locked up in a mined church.

We will visit the Memorial to the Soviet Soldier, I will tell the story of the memorial. You will have the opportunity to stand silently at the sculpture of a soldier, to look at his sad face, already detached from all earthly, to consider the figures of cranes, into which he seems to disintegrate in the air.

If you wish, for an additional fee, you can see the exposition of the Rzhev Museum of Local Lore, dedicated to the Battle of Rzhev with the impressive diorama “The Battle for Rzhev on September 24, 1942”.

On the way from Rzhev to Staritsa, I will tell about the founding of the city of Staritsa and its heyday under the Staritsky princes – close relatives of Ivan the Terrible and claimants to the Russian throne. You will learn about the difficult and dramatic fate of Andrei Staritsky and his only son Vladimir. I will tell you about two local brands - marble of the Russian Middle Ages - old white stone and old cheese.

In Elder, we will walk through the breathable antiquity, some special energy indescribable words to the ancient earthen ramparts on the site of the Old and New Fortifications, from which there is an amazing view of the picturesque curves of the Volga, lost in the haze of bright blue-green distances. We will see a grandiose, amazing for a small city in its scale and monumentality ensemble of classical architecture of Borisoglebsky Cathedral. We will visit one of the oldest monasteries of Russia, the Holy Uspensky Monastery (founded in the XII century) with its claim to the capital's sophistication and Moscow shine with the temple architecture of the Assumption (1530s) and the Trinity Cathedrals (1819), the tent Vvedenskaya (1569-1584) and the former gateway of John the Theologian (1694) churches, as well as a sculptural monument to the first Russian Patriarch Job.
