About the company:
The Academic Theatre named after Lensovet was founded in 1933 by a group of artists in the house of the former Dutch Church on Nevsky Prospekt, 20, then it was called “New Theatre”. A couple of months later, the theater was threatened with closure due to a fire in the costume room, then the fire destroyed all the rooms. The situation was saved by the stunning play “Mad Money” staged on the comedy by A. N. Ostrovsky. The success of the production helped the team to get a new room in the Theater Hall of A. I. Pavlova on Rubinstein Street (then it was called Trinity Street). Prominent cultural figures who appealed to the city authorities with a request to allocate a new building to the theater also made a significant contribution to obtaining the premises.
During the war, this theater building was also heavily destroyed. Due to the bombing, he needed major repairs, but the cast wanted to show the audience new performances as soon as possible. It was then that the theater received a residence permit on Vladimirsky Prospekt, 12.
In 1953, to its twentieth anniversary, the theater received a new name - the Lensovet Theater.
