About the company:

The Mariinsky Theatre traces its history back to the Bolshoi Theatre founded in 1783 by order of Empress Catherine the Great Theatre. The theater was originally located on the site where the St. Petersburg Conservatory is now located. Actually, the Mariinsky Theatre, named after the wife of Alexander II Empress Maria Alexandrovna, opened on October 2, 1860 with the opera Mikhail Glinka “Life for the Tsar”. During the Soviet years (from 1934 to 1992) it was known as the Leningrad State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after S. M. Kirov.
