Planetarium

Alexander Park, 4

About the company:

St. Petersburg Planetarium opened its doors to visitors in 1959. The discovery of the Planetarium in Leningrad aroused great interest of the inhabitants of the city. According to eyewitnesses, on November 4, 1959, the hall, which seats 400 people, was full in all three sessions. The first and several subsequent days came here by invitation, which were distributed through the district committees of the party. But later, when tickets began to be sold, the flow of those wishing to see the starry sky did not dry up. Having survived a fire, an inappropriate neighborhood of a nightclub, the Planetarium has preserved the best educational traditions. This unique cultural institution of the city, which is part of the Interregional Public Organization “Knowledge Society” of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, continues to popularize natural science knowledge. Unlike many Planetariums in Russia, housed in churches, for the then Leningrad Planetarium (as for the Moscow and Volgograd) the building was built specifically. The architect had the most difficult task to inscribe it in the historical buildings, located between the buildings of the theaters "Baltic House" (formerly named after Lenin Komsomol) and the Music Hall (formerly the cinema "Giant") on the frame, brought in 1901 from the Nizhny Novgorod fair. And the architect R.A. Bregman adequately coped with this task. The peculiarity of this dome building is that the dome is not visible: A star dome hall 15 meters high and 25 meters in diameter is located inside the building. A small dome on the right of the roof belongs to the Planetarium Observatory. To demonstrate the starry sky installed projection apparatus firm "Carl Zeiss" Planetarium. By the name of the apparatus and named a unique organization where organically intertwined culture and education.
