EXCURSION IN PETERHOF

Baroque French parks became popular in St. Petersburg after the royal court moved there. This happened in 1712. In the same year, Peter I conceived of creating a grand imperial residence, capable of surpassing the famous Versailles. Thus, the idea of building a new residence of the first Russian emperor on the shores of the Gulf of Finland arose.

Originally, this place was a manor called "Peter Hof" ("Peter Dvor"), where the king stopped on the way to the fortress under construction on Kotlin Island, the future Kronstadt. Originated on the site of the way house-palace, Peterhof is destined to become the most beloved park of Peter I.

During the tour, we will take a walk through the Lower Park of Peterhof, the number of fountains in which exceeds 150! This is the most famous landmark of Peterhof: the principle of the fountains has not changed since the XVIII century. As you know, the prototype of the fountains of Peterhof was Versailles, which Peter I visited in 1717. In fact, there are more fountains in Peterhof Park than in Versailles, and the park itself (according to many tourists) looks elegant and larger than the famous suburb of the French capital.

Separately, we will talk about the fountain water conduit - a wonderful creation of Russian hydraulic engineering of the XVIII - first half of the XIX centuries.

Not the last place in the tour is the story of the Peterhof road, because it is more than a highway running from St. Petersburg along the southern shore of the Gulf of Finland. Over the centuries of its history, the road has seen a lot: the Swedes, Tsar Peter the Great, members of the imperial family, and millions of other people traveled along it. Peterhof Road itself is a unique monument and is rightfully considered a landmark of St. Petersburg.
