Saint Petersburg

Excursion to the House of Scientists. Palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich.

Description:

On the Palace Embankment, there is one of the most magnificent palaces of St. Petersburg - the palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich, the son of Emperor Alexander II. The building was built in 1862 by A.I. Rezanov, who created an architectural masterpiece, the beauty of the exterior decoration reminiscent of the Italian palazzo of the Renaissance. The rooms of the palace were decorated with rich collections of paintings, sculptures, weapons, objects of decorative and applied art. It immediately became one of the centers of secular life of St. Petersburg. It often hosted balls, official receptions, musical and literary evenings. It was called the Little Imperial Court. On January 31, 1920, the palace became known as the House of Scientists. It is thanks to this that it was possible to preserve in its original form all the interiors of the palace, the splendour of the decorations of the state halls, the majesty of the grand ducal offices.

Also interesting is the personality of Vladimir Alexandrovich himself, about which you will learn during the tour - the third son of Alexander II, he held many important state posts, was the President of the Academy of Arts and a famous philanthropist, and at the same time - the commander of the Guard of the St. Petersburg Military District. It was he who decided to shoot a peaceful demonstration on January 9, 1905. The son of Vladimir Alexandrovich is scandalously famous V. Kn. Kirill Vladimirovich, in exile, proclaimed himself "acting emperor".
