Gatchina arose in the second half of the 18th century. during the reign of the Imp. Catherine 2. The Empress gave her favorite Count Grigory Orlov vast lands of the Gatchina manor, rich in picturesque terrain, spring lakes connected by rivers and channels, which allowed to create here a unique landscape park, the center of which was a unique palace in its architecture. By the will of fate, the palace will become the country residence of the Imp. Paul 1, and Gatchina by his efforts the model city of the Russian Empire and the residence of the Master of the Order of Malta, for which the Priorate Palace was built. Later, Gatchina will choose permanent residence Imp Alexander 3.
