Saint Petersburg

Oranienbaum. From A. Menshikov to the present day.

Description:

The first country residence, which belonged to the Most High Prince Alexander Danilovich Menshikov, and then became imperial, experienced ups and downs. Oranienbaum is the only imperial residence not occupied by the Nazis and least damaged during the Second World War near Leningrad. It was the Oranienbaum bridgehead that served as the starting point in the operation to lift the blockade of Leningrad.
Oranienbaum remembers both brilliance and luxury in the period when it was owned by A. Menshikov, the complicated relations during the period of residence here of the "Small Court" - the heir to the throne Peter Fedorovich and his wife Grand Duchess Ekaterina Alekseevna - the future Emperor Peter III and Empress Catherine II. The revival of the residence is associated with the name of Elena Pavlovna - the wife of the younger brother of Emperors Alexander I and Nicholas I Mikhail Pavlovich. Calmness in the residence came during the period of its possession by the Dukes of Mecklenburg-Streletsky.
During a walk through the park you will learn the history of the residence and its owners, see palaces, pavilions, picturesque ponds.
