PAVLOVSK - RESIDENCE OF PAUL I

Description:

The small town of Pavlovsk is located thirty kilometers from St. Petersburg. Here, drowning in the greenery of the park, stands a round squat tower with a flat dome and white columns. This Pavlovsk Palace is the pearl of the palace and park ensemble. These lands, once part of the possession of Veliky Novgorod, in the XVII century belonged to the Swedish province of Ingermanland, and since 1696 Charles XII began to build fortifications here.

With the onset of the Russian army during the Northern War, the Swedish fortifications quickly fell, and by the middle of the XVIII century the picturesque shores of Slavyanka became part of the Tsarskoye Selo hunting grounds. It was these lands that Catherine II in 1777 gave her son Paul - in connection with the birth of his son Alexander, the first grandson of the Empress.

The Empress even borrowed her best architect, Charles Cameron, for a while. In addition to Cameron, a whole constellation of outstanding architects worked on the creation of Pavlovsk masterpieces. V. Brenna, A.N. Voronikhin, J. Quarenghi, J.F. Tomamon, K.I. Rossi worked here. The architects, complementing each other, created an amazing architectural and landscape ensemble, one of the most beautiful and largest (the scale of the park is about 600 hectares) landscape parks in the world.

Pavlovsk Palace is one of the best examples of the classic Palladian-style palace-villa, the history of its creation and reconstruction after the Second World War is a wonderful page of Russian history.
