Peterhof, capital of fountains
Description:
Excursion to Peterhof is a mandatory program for every tourist. If you want to feel the true purpose of the city, then you should definitely visit the summer residence of Emperor Peter the Great. Thanks to elegant fountains, picturesque parks and luxurious palaces, Peterhof is called the Russian Versailles.
Parks of Peterhof is a real green kingdom, where the walls are lush vegetation of shrubs, under the feet of an emerald carpet of terry grass. In the midst of this riot, openwork bridges and vases whiten, bronze sculptures rise majestically. But the main wealth here, of course, is represented by fountains – there are more than 150 of them in total. And each of them is original and unique.
The history of Peterhof begins in 1709, when the construction of the first palaces of Peterhof - Monplezier - the favorite palace of Peter, Marley and the Hermitage began. And after a brilliant victory over the Swedish fleet, Peter decided to turn Peterhof into a luxurious symbol of the victorious actions of the Russian fleet. Magnificent parks, numerous fountains, gilded and marble statues, magnificent decoration of the palaces of Peterhof - all were supposed to demonstrate the wealth and glory of Russia. After World War II, Peterhof suffered greatly: palaces were destroyed and looted, magnificent sculptures of fountains were stolen, parks and gardens were destroyed. But the city managed to preserve this wonderful creation of Peter. Peterhof was restored and shone brighter than before.
