Saint Petersburg

In Kronstadt on a comfortable car with a professional local historian

Description:

I invite you to an individual large excursion to Kotlin Island and Kronstadt! The city of Kronstadt is one of the most popular suburbs of St. Petersburg. Cozy, well-groomed, with a bright history, beautiful sights. Here you will be impressed by the expanse of the Gulf of Finland, forts, dams, new parks and recreation places, Kronstadt Sea Cathedral on Anchor Square.

Bright impressions of visiting Kotlin Island begin on the way - we will drive along the northern part of the Dam. From here you can clearly see the expanse of the Gulf of Finland, forts, as well as recognizable waterways of the dam.

Upon arrival at Kotlin, I suggest visiting the Western Kotlin Reserve, where we will walk along the conveniently equipped eco-tropes, visit the beach and a high observation deck with magnificent views of the Gulf of Finland and Kotlin nature. Neighboring the reserve is the easily accessible Fort Shanets. Already here we get acquainted with the local fortifications, imbued with the atmosphere of the old abandoned fortress.

The next stop on the way to Kronstadt is the new Fort Island Park. It opened in 2020. You can buy coffee in the park. From the local embankment there is a view of forts Peter I and Alexander I, also known as Fort Chumnaya. This is a good place to take pictures.

And now we're going to Kronstadt. We pass by the ramparts of the Kronstadt fortress and the Kronverk Canal. We look at the cozy streets of the old city. We stop at the Gostiny Dvor and get out of the car. Here begins a walking tour of Kronstadt.

Talk of Kronstadt is unthinkable without mentioning St. John of Kronstadt. He served in St. Andrew’s Cathedral, on the site of which the St. Andrew’s Garden now exists. Nearby are the monuments Anchor and Cauldron, as well as the Tree of Desire. The latter stands on the banks of the Obvodny Canal, behind which the corps of the Kronstadt Admiralty adorn themselves.

The walk along Kronstadt will continue along Lenin Avenue (former Nikolaevskaya). Here we will appreciate the typical building of the old city. Remember the local merchants of the Bluebrush. Further through the Submariners Square we will go to the Blue Bridge, the Kronstadt Footstock and the pavilion with a seaographer, the Italian Palace. Across the street is an Italian pond with Dutch cuisine and customs. Against the background of this postcard look are old guns.

Behind the monument to I. K. Aivazovsky is the famous Petrovsky Dock - a unique engineering structure of the first half of the XVIII century. It is adjacent to Petrovsky Park. Passing through it, we will find ourselves on the pier and the Middle Harbour. This is another postcard view of lighthouses, berths, warships. And in the park itself there is a monument to the founder of Kronstadt - Peter I.

On the way to Anchor Square, we will go to souvenir shops. Let's go past Arsenal. The Makarov Bridge leads to the square, behind which stands a monument to Admiral S. O. Makarov. Here we will see the main dominant of the whole city - Kronstadt Maritime Cathedral. We'll definitely visit him.
