Vyborg

“Why are people so eager to see old cities? Perhaps because the truths revealed by history we understand here especially clearly and accept as a moral law. (Vyborg film, 1983) I prefer to start with Market Square. The first thing that catches the eye is the “Round Tower”, the remains of the fortifications of medieval Vyborg. And although many aspire to get to Vyborg for the sake of the Middle Ages and the magnificent castle, there is an opportunity to admire very interesting buildings of the era of "Finnish Romanticism" or "Northern Art Nouveau", many of which are located near the Market Square. A little walk along the wonderful Esplanade Park and admire the buildings of banks and houses built by wealthy citizens in the early 20th century. Then we will head along one of the narrow streets to the medieval part of the city, see the Burger Manor (16th century), the House on the Rock, the Church of St. Hyacinth. We will go to the Fortress Street, which is very reminiscent of the streets of old Tallinn, admire the magnificent Clock Tower (late 15th century), which Oleg Dahl climbed in the film Sannikov Land. Let’s go to the oldest residential building in Russia, “The House of the Citizen” (16th century). Visit the ruins of the Dominican monastery (15th century) and the Town Hall tower (15th century). If you get tired, you can relax, for example, in the cellars of Borhard, in the old Coach or in the house of Val, where the atmosphere of previous centuries is skillfully reproduced. In addition to the well-known Vyborg pretzel (which, to my taste, is dry), some cafes try to cook according to medieval recipes, as in Vyborg very tasty and inexpensive local beer. Then we will head to the Town Hall Square, see the monument to the founder of the city Torgils Knutsson, the house of Vekrut, the building of the old Town Hall, the Granite Palace is located near. Then we move to Castle Island and survey the wonderful Vyborg Castle, founded in the late 13th century by the Swedes.
