1st Winter Bridge
Description:
In 1720, a canal was dug between the Moika and Neva rivers, later it was called the Winter groove. Several bridges passed through the canal, including the section of the Big Millionnaya Street, which in our time is simply Millionnaya Street. The first bridge was drawn and made of wood. Already in the middle of the 18th century, a permanent bridge with three span buildings was built. The bridge is located next to the German Sloboda, which influenced its name on April 20, 1738, the bridge was officially named German. The townspeople called it the bridge of the old Winter Palace, despite its official name. A stone bridge with a humpback structure was installed here in 1783. Previously, the Red Channel was on the Champ de Mars, but after it was filled up, the bridge was moved here to the Millionnaya Street. This led to a new name for the bridge - Million.
Since 1828 on the city plan, the bridge was called the barracks of the Preobrazhensky regiment of the same name, in 1829 it was again renamed the "Winter Bridge". It was not until 1940 that the bridge received the modern name of the 1st Winter Bridge.
