1st Garden Bridge
Description:
The 1st Garden Bridge is located in the central district of St. Petersburg and connects the Spassky and 1st Admiralty Islands across the Moika River. It is a continuation of the embankment of the Lebyazhya groove, which connects with the embankment of the Moika River. Previously, the bridge was called the Second Tsaritsynsky after the nearby Tsaritsyn meadow. The bridge was renamed Garden because of the surrounding green spaces. Nearby are the Summer Garden, the Mikhailovsky Garden, the square at the Engineering Castle and the Field of Mars.
The first bridge on this site was wooden and was built in 1716. It had a lifting middle part for passing mast ships. In 1836, it was replaced by a single-span stone arch bridge with a gentle brick vault. Engineers P.P. Bazin, A.D. Gotman and I.F. Buttats worked over the artistic casting grille. In her drawing, in addition to crossed copies, there are images of round shields. During the restoration in 1967, all decorative linings were covered with thin sheet gold.
