Alarchin

english, the city of St. Petersburg

Description:

Alarchin Bridge is located in the Admiralty district of St. Petersburg and connects two islands: Kolomensky and Pokrovsky through the Griboyedov Canal, along the axis of English Avenue.

To the metro station "Sadovaya" distance of two kilometers.

There is a version of historians that the name of the bridge was given incorrectly, since the bridge bore the name of the master Alatchanin, who lived nearby in the XVIII century. Due to the distorted pronunciation of the name, the bridge survived to our times, being already Alarchin. In 1752, the first wooden bridge was built on the site of Alarchin, which lasted about 11 years.

When the granite embankments were equipped, the construction of a new bridge in the style of that time began, similar bridges can be seen in the lower reaches of the Catherine Canal. The width of the bridge was about 10 meters, the wooden bridge had three spans and granite supports with obelisks-lanterns made of glass and a draw span in the center. The last time the bridge was rebuilt in accordance with the project of the architect Zazersky and engineers Bers, Pshenitsky and Stanovy. The beams of wood were replaced with metal and the bridge was expanded to 15 meters. During the siege of Leningrad, not far from the bridge on Maklin Street, there was an open-air morgue, the dead were brought there.

On December 31, 1834, the Imperial Nikolaev Children's Hospital was opened near the Alarchin Bridge, now it is called the Modern Infectious Disease Hospital No. 18 named after N. F. Filatov. In addition, you can find the Church of the Estonian Orthodox Brotherhood.
