Description:
Austrian Square is one of the attractions of St. Petersburg. Located on the Petrograd side, made in the Art Nouveau style, it is considered the most European square of the city.
Kamennoostrovsky Avenue and Mira Street converge on this octagonal ensemble. Its foundation dates back to 1720. During this period, the first smears with craftsmen working in the Armoury Office appeared here.
In the 19th century, wooden buildings appeared here, gardens were laid. It was just called the Square.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the famous architect Vasily Shaub made a number of changes to the square. In particular, he built four buildings that made up a regular octagon.
At different times in these houses lived Leonid Andreev, Fyodor Sologub, Alexander Blok and other famous people. Another building was completed in Soviet times. It fit harmoniously into the ensemble. At the same time, the name of the square appeared.
Since the architecture of the houses resembled Austrian, the mayors gave the appropriate name. The Austrian ambassador was invited to the grand opening of the square as a guest.
