Description:
The Babolov Palace is the cultural heritage of Russia, located in the Babolovsk Park of the City of Pushkin. The history of its origin begins with the XVIII century: Grigory Potemkin in 3 versts from Tsarskoye Selo arranged a manor with a small landscape garden.
In 1780, a wooden house was built, which in 1785 was rebuilt into a stone palace. The building was erected in the Gothic style: jagged parapets, pointed windows and an octagonal tower with a tent coating. The one-storey building (summer building) looked original and unusual, a huge marble bath was installed in the main room, in which they bathed on hot days.
By 1791, the building had been abandoned as it was infrequently visited due to its remoteness. 1824-1825 can be called the second birth of the palace. Its restructuring began V. Stasov. Its dimensions were significantly increased, in the center there was an oval hall, and the marble bathroom was replaced by a granite one. Granite has been polished for 10 years. The height of the bath reached 196 centimeters, a depth of 152, its weight was 48 tons. It was called “the first in the world” (historian I. Yakovkin).
The architectural work was completed in 1829, the reconstruction was huge, but the Gothic style was preserved. During the Patriotic War, the Babolov Palace was thoroughly damaged, but the bath was preserved. The Germans even tried to take her out. But we couldn't. Today, the palace is a ruin, but restoration is expected.
