Bank Bridge

Bank Pedestrian Bridge, 30 Griboyedov Canal Embankment, St. Petersburg

Description:

Bank Bridge is one of the three suspension bridges of St. Petersburg that have survived to this day. Due to its expressive architectural design, it became famous far beyond the city limits. The chains on which the construction of the bridge rests are disguised inside four griffins with gilded wings, proudly sitting at the corners of the crossing. These griffins confidently enter the list of symbols of St. Petersburg. Griffins were not accidentally chosen as “guardians” of the bridge near the Assignation Bank building, because according to ancient Greek mythology, griffins were the best guards of treasures.

Very picturesque looked forged grille Bankovsky bridge, decorative decoration which consisted of fans and gracefully curved leaves of palm trees. Unfortunately, at the end of the XIX century, the original grille was lost and it was possible to restore it only in 1952 according to the surviving drawings and drawings. At the same time, the lost lanterns over the heads of the griffins were reconstructed.

In the second half of the twentieth century, the bridge was repeatedly restored and now appears before us almost in its original form.
