City Duma Tower
Description:
The City Duma Tower is one of the recognizable historical sites of St. Petersburg. It is located at the intersection of Dumskaya Street and Nevsky Prospect. King Paul I ordered the construction of a tower here. It was supposed to serve as a signal in case of emergencies in the city.
Construction lasted from 1799 to 1804. The project was led by Italian architect and artist Jacob Giacomo Ferrari. Built in the classic style.
The tower was supposed to adjoin the building without elevation. Nicholas I carried out a large-scale reconstruction. So, there were signal balls (notified of the place of fire and its strength) and another tier. In 1839 the building became part of the telegraph line. Today, this red clock tower cannot be overlooked. It has a pentagonal shape, on each tier - pilasters, and at the top - a balcony with an openwork grille. Attention is also drawn to the granite staircase with wide marches. You can get by public transport to Nevsky Prospekt.
