Datsan Buddhist Temple

Primorsky Prosp., 91, St. Petersburg, Russia

Description:

The St. Petersburg Buddhist Temple was founded in 1909 at the request of the Tibetan Dalai Lama. The name “Datsan” translates as “monastery school”. A great contribution to its construction was made by Agvan Lobsan Dorjiev. He purchased a plot of land in 1909 on the outskirts of the city after permission to build a temple. This quiet and secluded place perfectly suited the purpose of the temple. Construction lasted four years. The events of the early twentieth year contradicted the ideas of Buddhist monks. So they left the monastery, and the building itself was looted. In Soviet times, Buddhists were persecuted by the authorities, many were deported to camps or shot. Only in 1990 the church services were resumed. On the territory of the temple there is a statue of Buddha, covered with gold leaf and decorated with jade. The temple is located on Primorsky Prospect. You can get by metro to the station "Old village" or "Krestovsky island".
