Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God at the Polytechnic University

ooh Polytechnic, 29, St. Petersburg, Russia, 195251

Description:

The Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Mother of God at the Polytechnic University was founded in 1912 on the memorable day of the opening of the university and the holiday in honor of which it is named. The church is made in the form of an extension to the student hostel.

The decision to build the church was made due to the fact that the university was far from the city and temples. It was built on the project of the engineer and teacher of this university - I. V. Padlevsky, who won the competition, and architect V. A. Kosyakov, who made some changes to the project.

The church is a three-nave cross-domed temple with a gilded bulbous dome. The building is made in two colors, in pseudo-Russian style with some elements of modernity. The facades of the church are decorated with mosaics, and above the entrance you can see a ceramic cross decorated with bas-reliefs of saints. The interior of the temple is covered with frescoes and has a three-tiered picturesque iconostasis.

After the October Revolution, it was closed and only returned to the Orthodox Church in 1992, and fully restored in 2000.
