Church of Simeon the God-receiver and Anna the prophetess

ooh Mokhovaya, 48, St. Petersburg, Russia, 191028

Description:

The Church of Simeon the God-Receiver and Anna the Prophetess, opened in 1734, is one of the oldest in St. Petersburg and once was among the churches of the Order of St. Anna. It is located in the central part of the city at the corner of V.G. Belinsky and Mokhovaya streets.

The church was built by decree of Empress Anna Ioannovna by architect Mikhail Grigorievich Zemtsov in cooperation with Ivan Yakovlevich Blanka. Thus, on the site of a wooden church in honor of Archistratig Michael was built a stone church with three thrones and a bell tower.

The architecture of the temple combines the Baroque style and the features of the architecture of ancient Russia. The temple ends with a light drum topped with a faceted dome with a complex pattern. At the temple, you can see a high 47-meter bell tower topped with a spire, in the installation of which the famous Dutch master Harman van Bolos participated.

At the end of the 19th century, the church was enlarged and restored, and in 1938 it was closed, like many other temples. It was only in 1991 that it was reopened to believers.
