CPKIO Elagin Palace

Main Al., 4. St. Petersburg, Russia

Description:

Elagin Palace is a very beautiful building on Elagin Island in St. Petersburg, which was once a summer imperial palace. It is also called Elaginsky or Elaginoostrovsk.

Its first owner was Ivan Perfilevich Elagin - statesman, historian and poet, and for him this house was built by the architect Giacomo Quarnegi. However, at the beginning of the XIX century, the palace was bought by Alexander I, at whose command the palace was rebuilt by the architect Karl Rossi.

During this period, several buildings were erected on the island, in addition to the palace itself, topped with a dome: three additional pavilions, as well as the Kitchen and Stable buildings. The interior of the palace was designed by sculptors Pimenov and Malinowski.

During the Great Patriotic War, the palace was badly damaged, and after the victory it was restored and became a museum in which collections of ancient works of art were exhibited.

Today, the Yelagin Palace also hosts various exhibitions and entertainment events in the style of different eras. In front of the palace, on the territory of the Central Park of Culture and Recreation (CPKiO) there are modern attractions.
