Russia, St. Petersburg, Peterhof.
Description:
Monplaisir is a palace in Peterhof, which is an architectural monument of the 1st quarter of the XVIII century (the palace was built in 1714-1723). The building is located in the eastern part of the Lower Garden, near the Gulf of Finland. The space on the coast, near the sea itself, where you can see all the passing ships, was chosen by Peter the Great himself. The name of the place comes from the French. Mon plaisir, which means “my pleasure.” The palace, indeed, became the favorite work of the emperor, the ruler put his soul into it - he personally made sketches and schematic drawings, marked not only the location, but also the layout, placement of fountains, some elements of decorative decoration and much more.
The appearance of the palace reflects the outstanding personality of the first Russian emperor, his aesthetic tastes, interests and affections: the decorative design was clearly conceived under the influence of Dutch architecture of the 18th century, so the palace was sometimes called “Dutch house”.
