Ekateringof Bridge
Description:
The Ekateringofsky Bridge was formerly called Riga Bridge, it crosses the Ekateringofka River along Riga Avenue and leads to Gutuevsky Island. The bridge was built in 1910-1914 with the participation of the Putilov Plants Society. The St. Petersburg Commercial Port and the Ministry of Commerce proposed the idea of building this bridge for communication between the island and the mainland. The bridge was opened in March 1917 due to the civil war.
The creation of the bridge project was carried out by specialists of the American company “The Sherzer Rolling Lift Bridge Company”, and engineers Pshenitsky and Akimov-Perets supervised the construction. They wanted to call the bridge Galician in honor of the victories of the Russian army during the First World War in Galicia. However, the name behind the bridge was not fixed and in 1920 it was officially named Ekateringofsky. Construction of the bridge: metal, single-span drawbar with an inclination to the river axis of 75 degrees, granite cladding. The width of the bridge is 21 m, and its length is almost 67 meters. In 1941, one of the pillars of the bridge was displaced due to the explosion of air bombs during the war, but in 1950 they carried out reconstruction. The bridge no longer belongs to the drawbridges of St. Petersburg, in the architecture there are Gothic motifs and notes of modernism.
