Danaida Fountain
Description:
On the same line with the Voronikhin colonnades, on the border of the square of large flower beds there are semicircular marble benches with unique armrests made in the form of lion paws.
Behind each bench are wide fountain bowls decorated with gilded bronze sculptures. In the western bowl - "Nymph", and in the eastern - "Danaida".
“Danaida” with a jug was the daughter of the Argos king Danaeus, who for the murder of her husband was doomed to fill a bottomless barrel. It is made from the original X. Rauch, according to the model of I. Vitali. The nymph is a copy of an ancient statue. The composition was called “Fountains of Marble Benches” and complemented the ensemble of the Lower Park, or rather its central part.
