The Girl with the Jug Fountain

Description:

This fountain is located in Tsarskoye Selo near St. Petersburg, in the Catherine Park. You will find it between the Granite Terrace and the Great Pond. In the time of Catherine I there was a spring, from which a ditch was built through the dam to provide water to workers and horses.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the engineer A. Betankur was instructed to “make this place in good taste”, and here we admire one of the most poetic fountains. The sculpture was created by Pavel Sokolov, perhaps the idea belongs to Sokolov.

A barefoot girl in an antique tunic, sitting on a large stone near a broken jug, was sung by A. S. Pushkin. The poet magically combined the moment and eternity in the poem, subtly conveying the sad beauty of this corner of the park.

Anna Akhmatova also said about the girl with purely female jealousy: "Look, she is happy to be sad, So elegantly naked."
