Whale Fountain
Description:
The Whale Fountain was designed by Miketti on the orders of Peter I. But for many years it stood as a pond 135x57 meters, without any decoration.
Only in 1740 the pond was decorated with a fairy-tale figure from the tree “Fish-whale”, which later determined the name of the fountain. On the sides of the miracle fish there were lead figures of “sea bulls”. At the end of the XIX century, the composition was so dilapidated that it had to be disassembled, the fountain was remade and now has the appearance that we can admire today - in the middle of the mirror surface of the pond, which is shaped like a bucket, rises eight meters hollow inside the water column. And around it frolic four gilded dolphins, releasing arcs of jets from the open mouths.
