Fountain bell with statue "Favun with goat"
Maritime Al., Petrodvorets, St. Petersburg, Russia
Description:
Perhaps the most beautiful ensemble of the Peterhof Lower Park is the Monplaisir Palace, which means “my pleasure”. In front of the palace there is a small garden in the Dutch style, consisting of four flower beds. In the center of each of them are fountains, one of which is decorated with the figure of a faun with a goat.
The pedestal of the fountain is 1 meter high - it was used for its implementation by chiseled copper and was built as a column decorated with various ornaments of leaves. First, it installed a gilded statue of Ganymede in lead - a hero of Greek myths. And already in the period of 1797-1799, it was decided to replace it with a new lead figure - this is a executed copy from the original statue of the Faun with a goat. In 1817, it was decided to repeat the statue and use bronze.
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, bronze statues from all fountains were taken to Leningrad. In 1941-1944, the pedestals of the Bells were destroyed by the Nazis, and the pools were destroyed. Since 1950, work has been carried out on their restoration, and today the fountains of the Monplaisir Garden exist as rare works of fountain art of the first quarter of the XVIII century.
