The Christmas Tree Fountain

near the Marlin Alley of the Upper Park of Peterhof, Petrodvorets, a suburb of St. Petersburg, Russia

Description:

This fountain is one of many located in the famous Peterhof Park. Despite its rather undescript appearance, at one time it was indispensable for pranks and unexpected surprises.

In the shadow of alleys near the fountain "Oak" on the clearing are three metal Christmas trees. They are very similar to the real ones: metal branches are soldered with tin coniferous needles, painted in green. From the pipe-branches beats the water that fills a small square pond (in the 18th century it was used as an aquarium). Different height "Christmas" created in 1784 by the project of F. Strelnikov. His main purpose was to make fun of the guests of the park. As the guests strolled past three inconspicuous Christmas trees, water suddenly turned on, and the festively dressed gentlemen and ladies found themselves doused.

During World War II, the Nazis destroyed the fountain. Restoring the Christmas tree was not so easy due to the lack of detailed description and drawings. It was not until 1958 that the fountain reappeared in the park. However, now it works in non-stop mode, having lost its original “joke” function.
