The Golden Mountain Fountain
Description:
The Golden Mountain Cascade Fountain is located in the western part of the Lower Park in Peterhof. The construction of this structure was started by order of Peter I, who made an indelible impression of the cascades in the French park Marley. The construction of the fountain began in 1721, when the architect N. Michetti created a project for the design of the slope with a cascade staircase, and was completed in 1726. Sculptures to the fountain were created in the 30s of the XVIII century by the architect M. Zemtsov, on his instructions, the steps of the fountain were lined with gilded sheets of copper, from where the name of the fountain came.
The 14-meter cascade consists of 22 steps of a fountain staircase framed by magnificent marble and gilded statues. A significant part of marble sculptures was installed here in the middle of the XIX century, replacing the statues installed according to the project of M. Zemtsov.
In two round pools, symmetrically in relation to the cascade, there are Menager fountains, built according to the project of architect N. Michetti in 1722-1725.
The ensemble of the fountain is complemented by four fountains-bells called Tritons, installed in the parterre part of the Golden Mountain. Babies-tritons hold over the heads of a bowl, the water in which falls in the form of a veil, from a nozzle equipped with a concave plate.
