Engineering lock

Garden Street, 2, St. Petersburg, 191023

Description:

The engineering castle has another name – Mikhailovsky. This is one of the imperial palaces. Located in the city center on the banks of the Neva River.

It was conceived as the grand residence of Emperor Paul I. After a trip to Europe, Pavel personally engaged in the project of the palace, intending to combine the features of Russian and European architecture. Architect Bazhenov completed the project.

The palace was built in four years. But Paul lived there only 40 days. He was killed in a conspiracy. For many years the building was abandoned.

And only when it was given to the military school, the name of Mikhailovsky Castle changed to Engineering. Here was the spirit of an ordinary barracks, so few cared about the expensive decor. Restoration became possible when the castle building was transferred to the Russian Museum in 1991.

Now the territory of the castle is very modest. Tourists will be attracted here by the appearance of the building, the parade descent to the Moika River, the Resurrection Canal and the bridge. You can get by metro to the station "Nevsky Prospect", and move further along Sadovaya Street in the direction of the Neva.
