Saint Petersburg

Kazan Square

Description:

St. Petersburg, Kazan Square, 2

Kazan Cathedral is an outstanding monument of Russian architecture of the early XIX century. It occupies an extremely important place in the city ensemble of St. Petersburg.

The appearance in St. Petersburg of the first church in the name of the Kazan Mother of God dates back to the beginning of the XVIII century, when Peter I ordered to transport the icon of the Kazan Mother of God from Moscow to the new capital. In 1733-1737, the architect M.G. Zemtsov built a small stone Kazan church near the Catherine Canal, which during the XVIII century served as a place of solemn state ceremonies. On the day of the coup on June 28, 1762, it was here that Archbishop Dmitry Sechenov proclaimed Catherine II “the autocrat of all Russia.”
