Kronverk Avenue
Description:
Kronverk Avenue is one of the main highways in the Petrograd district.
Back in the 19th century, it consisted of two separate sections of the road. The first was called Horse Street. This name was not accidental, since there was a market where horse trading was actively conducted. The second section had no name. Sometimes the road that was the predecessor of Kronverk Avenue was called the “road to the esplanade”. In the time of Peter I, there was a huge open space (esplanade) around the road. There were walks of the townspeople. In 1940, Emperor Nicholas I ordered the foundation of Alexander Park. It was then that both sections of the road were connected into a single street, renamed Kronverk Avenue. In Soviet times, the avenue bore the name of Maxim Gorky, and only in 1991 the historical name was returned.
In 2011, the avenue was completely transformed: the road surface was repaired, tram rails were replaced, pedestrian sidewalks were equipped. Almost every building of the avenue is a monument of architecture, to visit which the tourist will not only be interesting, but also useful.
You can get there by public transport: buses 6, 40 or metro to the station "Sport" or "Gorkovskaya".
