Alexander Park
Russia, St. Petersburg, Petrograd district
Description:
Alexander Park in Tsarskoye Selo is located near the Catherine Palace. Both of its parts - the New Garden and the Landscape Park - occupy about 200 hectares of area.
Previously, on the site where the Alexander Park is now located, there was a dense forest surrounded by a palisade. In it, the king hunted wild animals. In 1740, part of the park, located near the Catherine Palace, was turned into a "New" ("Upper") garden. It was created by Schrader and Kondakov on the project of Girard. In the garden there are Chinese, dragons and cross bridges, the Mushbok curtain, the Parnassus mountain, the Chinese theater, the Big and Small Caprices, the Chinese village. Today, the appearance of the garden has changed a lot: once slender rows of linden trees with wide alleys turned into chaotically sprawling trees. And now the regular part of the park is not much different from the landscape.
In 1790, in another part of Alexander Park, a landscape park with mound hills and three ponds was laid out. The architect Menelas built a whole complex of neo-Gothic structures here in a short time: Retirement stable, Lama Pavilion, Arsenal, Chapelle and the White Tower. Also in the park are the farm complex, the Ward Chamber, the Children's House, the Krasnoselsky Gate and the Yale Guard.
