Large alley in the city of St. Petersburg
d St. Petersburg, Stone Island, Petrograd district
Description:
The alley appeared in the middle of the XVIII century. Its length is more than 700 kilometers. Until 1909, it had the same name with the island. The name change occurred with the development of embankments on the coast of Nevka. Then there was a distinction between big and small.
In ancient times, the alley was a wide street, built up with expensive mansions. Trees were planted along the houses. That’s why, this area was called the alley. Some gardens have survived to our days. For example, the owner of the house No20 was a famous electrical engineer F. I. Dolivo-Dobrovolsky. From his dacha, only the service corps remained.
In history there are facts that the poet and writer A.S. Pushkin often visited him. Another mansion number 12 was occupied by the artist J. Y. Belsen. In 1903, several houses on the Great Alley were set aside for St. Petersburg agricultural courses. Now in their place is located Nautical school.
