The Botanical Garden at the Komarov Botanical Institute, located in St. Petersburg, is one of the oldest in Russia. Existing for more than two and a half centuries, the garden was founded by decree of Peter I in 1714 as the "Pharmacy Garden" - for the collection, study and use of medicinal plants.
The growth of the collections and the importance of the works led to the establishment of the Imperial Botanical Garden in 1823, and by 1913 it became not only the center of Russian botanical science, but also the largest botanical institution on a global scale.
The Botanical Garden has a rich collection of more than 7,500 species of plants from different parts of the globe growing in greenhouses, the area of which is about 1 hectare.
Every year in greenhouses remove the fruits of mango, cocoa, coffee, flakurtia, bananas, citrus and other fruit trees. Due to the large abundance of plants blooming at different times, the garden remains blooming all year round.
