Chansyn Idols in Sosnovka Park

194354, Russia, St. Petersburg, Sosnovka Park, North Avenue

Description:

Chansyn idols in Sosnovka Park were donated by Korea for the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg. 15 huge pillars four meters high are located near the intersection of Torez and Svetlanovsky streets.

According to the Korean side, the statues carved from the Murmansk pine should bring good luck to the city, and its residents - health and financial well-being. Idols reflect the sincerity and inner peace of the Korean soul. Their purpose is to protect the inhabitants from evil spirits, so they look intimidating. The statues are carved by Korean masters – Jong Hon and King Ju Ho.

At the inauguration ceremony on August 11, 2003, Ambassador Jeong Tae-ik of Korea was present surrounded by Korean dancers in national costumes. Kneeling before the idols, he read an appeal to the Russians about good neighborly relations and cooperation between the two states.

The statues are located in a historic and picturesque place. In the XIX - early XX century here, in the thick of pine forest, often liked to visit writers I.S. Turgenev and V.G. Belinsky.
