Description:
Summer Garden is one of the oldest parks in St. Petersburg, it is considered almost the same age as the city. The Summer Garden is an important monument of garden and park art of the eighteenth century and is recognized as a cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.
The summer garden was founded in 1704. Tsar Peter I personally chose the place for the garden, and directly supervised the first stage of its creation - the choice of boundaries and layout. Until the mid-eighteenth century, the garden served as a summer residence for the king.
The summer garden is located on an island and is surrounded by water on all sides. The layout of the park is quite strict - three parallel alleys go along the entire territory, and at right angles they are crossed by paths. The alleys are decorated with an innumerable number of sculptures of marble and stone - on the paths of the park there are both statues of historical figures and characters of myths. Some of the former sculptures of the Summer Garden are now added to the museum collections, for example, the famous Venus Tauride, which is on display in the Hermitage. Also, the Summer Garden is famous for its fountains - there are many of them here.
The summer garden is one of the most beautiful places in the northern capital. This place served as an inspiration for many poets, and the garden can be seen in the paintings of painters of the previous era. Now the Summer Garden is one of the main attractions of St. Petersburg and a favorite place of rest for citizens.
