Mikhailovsky Garden in St. Petersburg
st. Petersburg, St. Engineering, 4
Description:
In the center of the city, near the temple of the Savior-on-Blood, there is a quiet and beautiful corner of nature, located on almost 10 hectares of land - this is the Mikhailovsky Garden. It is surrounded by a fence of lattice decorated with forged weavings of stems and large flowers. All forged elements were made at the Carl Wickler plant according to the project of A.A. Parland in 1903-1907.
The history of this place began in Peter’s time, when a palace was built here for the wife of Peter I. In the garden there were greenhouses for growing various exotic fruits and ponds with live fish. Here specially brought from the Pskov province several dozen nightingales.
Karl Rossi, architect, in 1817 began to build a residence for the brother of Tsar Alexander II – Mikhail Pavlovich. At the end of construction in 1825, the Third Summer Garden received its current name - Mikhailovsky, and became very landscape. It has a large meadow, winding paths, natural reservoirs. Elena Pavlovna, the wife of the Grand Duke, becomes the owner of the palace and park, using the latter for horseback riding and theatrical holidays.
After the Mikhail Pavlovich Palace becomes the Russian Museum, the Mikhailovsky Garden is opened to the general public.
