Park of Hero Cities in St. Petersburg

st. Petersburg, Moscow Sh., D.3

Description:

Park of Hero Cities (otherwise called Pulkovo Park) is located in the Moscow district of St. Petersburg. It was opened in 1989.

In the center of the park are three churches, chapels and auxiliary buildings. One of the churches, made in the neo-Russian style, is called the Nativity of Christ. Another St. George the Victorious was built in honor of the exploits of Russian soldiers in the Great Patriotic War. At the base of this church are capsules with earth from hero cities and places where the main battles of 1941-1945 took place. On the Sergius Island of the park pond there is a third church – St. Sergei of Radonezh, built according to the project of the Swiss architect J. Dahinden.

In the northern part of the park, bunkers (long-term firing points) of the Great Patriotic War are still preserved.

The public of the city has repeatedly planted trees in the park in honor of memorable dates. For example, in 1995, forty birch trees were planted by war veterans, and in 1999 a lime alley was planted to commemorate the anniversary of the Moscow district.
