Park Sosnovka in the city of St. Petersburg

st. Petersburg, St. Jacques Duclos, 67

Description:

One of the popular attractions of St. Petersburg is the Sosnovka Park, the total area of which is 303 hectares. It is bounded by North, Svetlanovsky and Tikhoretsky Avenues, as well as Yesenin Street. The central alley of the park is Jacques Duclos Street. In the 1830s, the surroundings of the Forest Institute gradually turned into a suburban area, and the land near them, overgrown with a dense pine forest, began to be called “Sosnovka”. The villagers used them for private walks. An interesting fact is that in the summer of 1844, V. G. Belinsky and I. S. Turgenev loved to walk and talk along these “pine rows”.

Among the residents of the central districts of St. Petersburg, Sosnovka had a reputation as a suburb, perfectly suitable for duels. So, in the winter of 1840 in the park, on the site of the modern crossroads of Svetlanovsky and Torez Avenues, a duel between Lermontov and Ernest de Barant took place. In the middle of the XX century "Sosnovka" was an ordinary area of forest. In the 1960s it was decided to make a forest park, which was given the name "Sosnovsky". At the end of 1968, it was renamed the Sosnovka Park.
